Halloween History

trick-or-treatAround 700 years ago a holiday was declared to celebrate the lives of the saints – the day we know today as All Saint’s Day which we celebrate on November 1. The night before All Saint’s Day (All Hallow’s Day) was known as Hallowe’en and was considered to be a time when ghosts and witches could travel freely in the world. This tradition disappeared throughout Europe for the most part in the 1600s, but was kept alive in Scotland and in Ireland. The Irish word for Halloween is Samhain. Many of the traditions we now associate with Halloween originated in Ireland, including playing pranks and lighting jack-o-lanterns which were originally hollowed-out turnips. 19th-century Irish immigrants to the United States brought their halloween customs with them, and there over the years the tradition was americanised (and American-sized), with the jack-o-lantern turnips replaced by pumpkins and the more modern practice of trick-or-treating.

Lately the American version of the originally Irish tradition has made its way back across the ocean, with trick-or-treating, costume parties, and people decorating their homes and shops with bats, spiders and spiderwebs, plastic witches, ghosts and goblins!

Happy Halloween from PharmaPOS!
